Impressionist painter Edgar Degas is perhaps one of the most well-known artists who portrayed ballet. He created The Ballet Class (La Classe de Danse) between 1873-1876, according to the Musée d’Orsay, where the painting is housed.

"Degas's favourite subjects were ballerinas at work, in rehearsal or at rest, and he tirelessly explored the theme with many variations in posture and gesture," the museum notes, adding that this particular work depicts ballet master Jules Perrot addressing a class of ballerinas exhausted at the end of their rehearsal time.
